About the Internship
CIVICUS is recruiting a Civic Space Research Intern to support its global civic space research work. This is a remote, full-time internship opportunity for entry-level candidates interested in human rights, civic freedoms, international development, research, and civil society advocacy.
The intern will support the CIVICUS Monitor team, particularly ahead of the annual People Power Under Attack reports. The role involves research, data coding, incident tracking, administrative support, and communication-related tasks.

Responsibilities
Research and Data Analysis
- Support the implementation of the CIVICUS Monitor civic space incidents tool.
- Assist with data coding of civic space incidents.
- Support research ahead of the People Power Under Attack report.
- Collect regional case studies where required.
- Draft fact sheets and other research materials as assigned.
- Support wider civic space research activities.
Administration
- Support the Civic Space Research team with administrative and logistical tasks.
- Assist with organizing workshops, meetings, and related activities.
- Carry out other administrative duties as assigned.
Communications
- Support team communication and information-sharing activities.
- Assist with social media and other communication platforms.
- Support the creation of communication visuals using designated platforms.
Requirements
Applicants should have:
- A completed bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Political Science, or a related field.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Knowledge or experience conducting research on human rights.
- Understanding of international human rights frameworks related to:
- Freedom of association
- Peaceful assembly
- Freedom of expression
Desirable Requirement
- Proficiency in any United Nations language is an added advantage.
